10 Ways to Save on Laundry Costs

  1. If you live in an area with lots of sunlight, ditch the dryer altogether and dry your clothes outside. We’ve been doing this for a few years now, and are very happy with the results and savings.
  2. Try to wash your clothes only when you have a full load.
  3. If you don’t have a full load, use the machine’s water level adjustment feature to save energy.
  4. Use hot water for washing only when necessary for the clothing material. Most clothes can be washed in cold water, which reduces energy use.
  5. Clean the lint trap after every load, and make sure the exhaust line is clean.
  6. Use an automatic clothes-drying cycle, rather than a timed cycle.
  7. Use less detergent. If your clothes don’t have obvious stains, less detergent will get your clothes just as clean.
  8. Similar to using less detergent, if you use dryer sheets, rip them into two pieces and use half.
  9. If you’re a do-it-yourself kinda person, make your own detergent. Do a quick search in Google, and tons of results show up.
  10. If your machine is 10 years old or more, replace it with a new model that has the Energy Star label.
