I’ve felt sorry for Jeremiah for quite some time.
His temple sermon, as recorded in Jeremiah 7, would have been terribly difficult to deliver. Here’s a sampling of what God asked him to do:
“Stand at the gate of the Lord’s house and there proclaim this message: “ ‘Hear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord. This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways and your actions, and I will let you live in this place. Do not trust in deceptive words and say, “This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!” If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, if you do not oppress the alien, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your forefathers for ever and ever. But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless. (Jeremiah 7:2-8 NIV)
Basically, God is asking Jeremiah to stand at the doors of the church and be a voice of truth. The people have been so deceived, and God wants to open their eyes. So he sends Jeremiah.
I’m not egotistical enough to say that God is calling me to be the voice of truth for the church. But, I do honestly believe that God has allowed me some unique life experiences. As a result, I’ll probably never be able to fully acclimate into a Western society. I’ll likely always be at the fringes because of what I’ve experienced.
What if there were a way that I could honestly and lovingly challenge a materialistic mindset? What If I could live within this culture and battle against all the temptations of wealth? What if people were willing to allow that message to challenge them?
I believe one of the biggest spiritual issues facing American churches is materialism. (Yes, Canadians, you’re in there, too.)
I believe that God placed my family on the mission field in Papua New Guinea to change our hearts and to touch the lives of those citizens.
Because of our unique experiences, I think I also provide a unique perspective on the topic of Bible and money. That perspective came from God.
So MH4C will be a voice. Perhaps a voice in the wilderness.
It will be a place you can come to be challenged, to be transformed, and to re-evaluate your priorities.
I won’t teach you how to build wealth. There are others whom God has allowed to do that. I will teach you how to get out of debt because that is a barrier to simplicity and frugality. I will teach you how to save money because those savings can allow you to have more to provide to God’s Kingdom work.
At times, I will probably make you feel uncomfortable. I make myself feel uncomfortable with what I write. I want to lovingly share my own struggle with wealth and my own desire to put God first in everything I do.
My prayer is that people who visit this site will come away with a sense of mission, focus, and purpose with their finances. Moreover, I pray that purpose will be to do something more for the kingdom than they were doing before they visited this site.
My mission statement will remain the same:
MH4C promotes a frugal, simple, debt-free, and generous lifestyle so Christians can faithfully maximize their resources by putting them at the disposal of God’s Kingdom. MH4C is committed to providing relevant resources in order to assist Christians in this effort.
Basically, I plan to be more true to that calling (now that I don’t have the monetization barrier).
